Society of Interpreters for the Deaf

Bridging voices since 1990.

We are S.I.D. — Kuala Lumpur's interpreter society for Malaysia's Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. We interpret, we teach, we bake.

Our story

Equal access to information, communication, and community.

Founded in 1990, the Society of Interpreters for the Deaf serves as interpreters on the educational, judicial and other various fronts to enable the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community an opportunity of equal rights and access to information and communication. Our sister centre — the Community Service Centre for the Deaf (CSCD) — has nurtured Deaf youth aged 5–20 since 1995.

What we do

Four programmes, one community.

Every service we offer exists to remove a barrier — in a courtroom, a classroom, an interview, or a kitchen.

Interpreting services

Court, medical, educational, and corporate interpreting between Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) and spoken English / Bahasa Malaysia.

Sign language classes

Beginner to advanced BIM instruction for families, professionals, students, and allies. Group and private sessions.

CSCD — youth centre

Literacy, life-skills, and leadership programmes for around 50 Deaf students aged 5–20 at our centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Vocational training

Pathways into employment — including hands-on baking, food service, and customer hospitality at Silent Teddies.

Silent Teddies Bakery

Baked by Deaf hands. Loved by everyone.

Silent Teddies is our award-winning social enterprise — a working bakery staffed entirely by Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing bakers. Cookies, breads, and catering, made with care since 2010, re-launched as a full social enterprise in 2017. Every order funds vocational training and the CSCD youth programme.

Learn the BIM alphabet

Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia — A to Z.

BIM uses a one-handed manual alphabet for fingerspelling names and loan words. It's a starter — not the whole language. Try spelling your name, then learn BIM properly with our partners.
